Project: WATG's Crown Hat


This is yet another Wool and the Gang pattern I've completed. You can find the pattern for the crown hat here free of charge on their website. This particular hat was a collaboration with Vivienne Westwood. She's one of the designers I admire. I thought I'd tackle it because I had an extra skein of Crazy Sexy Wool, which I intended to use for a different hat, and some extra yarn left over from my Wonderwool sweater.

Wool and the Gang is a great source of knitting projects, yarns and tools for the beginner or novice, or even the occasional knitter who wants to do a knit-along. However, if you are a thrifty knitter, you might find these patterns and yarns aren't worth your money because they are a little overpriced. They have a very "designer" look that would fit right into instagram, and you really do pay for the convenience of knitting kits.

Wool and the Gang also released a video tutorial on their channel, so if you were at the very beginning of your knitting journey, this will take you through the entire pattern:


It's a very quick knit and you can complete it on a weekend afternoon if you're a novice like me. A beginner can easily pick up the techniques through the video. I used my KnitPro Symfonie Interchangeables and I finally learned how to attach those needles using the cable key (why didn't I learn this sooner?). You can knit with double-pointed needles, as stated in the pattern.

Overall, I'm a little disappointed with the result. Mainly because I'm not keen on my choice of colours and should've gone for a yellow for the crown, or a white. Something not as dark as the pink because it doesn't look much like a crown and more like pink Christmas pudding with a glaze. The hat isn't as long as the pictures from Wool and the Gang but it's a shallow fit.

Inspiration: Catherine Deneuve - The Hunger

The Hunger (1983) is the last film collaboration Catherine Deneuve had with Yves Saint Laurent. 80s fashion suited the thousand-year-old Egyptian vampire, Miriam -- accessories were bold and flashy, the shoulder pads making one seem more confident and powerful. In fact, every time I use my YSL lipstick, I'm reminded of this movie -- something about YSL and the flashy gold packaging makes me recall this film. This vampire movie had its flaws but I will acknowledge that it was beautiful, aesthetically speaking. Inspiration: Catherine Deneuve in 'Belle de Jour'

Catherine Deneuve is one of many style icons I look up to, right up there with Audrey Hepburn. She's classy but seemingly has an aura of mystery and ice. For me, she's the quintessential French woman.  Belle de Jour (1967) is perhaps one of my favourite movies and it is the first of her works I had seen. Yves Saint Laurent designed the costumes for her character in this film and from this collaboration, she became one of his muses and modelled for him.  Catherine Deneuve plays   Séverine  Serizy, a wealthy housewife who's unable to be intimate with her husband. She becomes a prostitute in a high-class brothel and is called "Belle de Jour" there because she only works during the day. One of the many items I loved were the coats.
