Formal: Final Post

Hello there, I realised that I have not posted anything regarding my year 12 formal from last year and I've just left it without an end. I actually did write a post but was unable to finish it before leaving for the US. I'm back in Sydney and with summer hopefully coming to an end, I'm also starting my first year of university, doing a degree equivalent to the pre-med programs they have in the US (we don't have anything called "pre-med" here).  I didn't end up making a dress for the formal and my purchase was a last minute one. I ended up purchasing a lacy tea dress. My bad time management is to blame and my lack of motivation... I shouldn't make empty promises. Fortunately, I had some time to make my headband because I wasn't going to go unless I had something I had personally made on me. It's a ruched headband made of golden silk habotai and it was possibly the most difficult project I had ever done without a proper pattern. That mea...

Formal: Update

Hello there! I haven't been updating this blog lately as I've been quite busy with reality.  My personal situation (if you're not interest, please ignore): My final examinations are drawing near, I'm in my assessment period before the finals. I also plan to take the UMAT (which would be an external examination) and not to mention that I thought it would be fun to add a chemistry competition into this mix. School is practically dominating every minute of my life at the moment.  Back to what I plan to talk about: my formal dress. I've decided to be lazy and instead of sewing the dress myself, I'll just decorate a pre-made dress. I've got most of my materials to make the dress except the dress itself. It will probably be difficult to stick to the design I had originally wanted.  However, I still have that Gibbous Fashions inspiration in mind. I can just imagine how fun it would be to rip those strips of cloth and the hours it would take to sew the st...

Formal: Betsey Johnson + Gibbous Fashions + My Plan

As I had promised (I think), I'll be writing about formals. It's been a while since I've written something. I'm not exactly pleased with my examination results so I would have to limit the amount of time I have for writing these posts in order to fill them in for some study.  I suppose Betsey Johnson would be one of the designers I think of whenever I hear anything about Prom . I adore the 50s inspired, feminine dresses they offer - it's just so girly and lacy. While I was thinking about what to wear for my year 10 formal (I didn't end up going), I came across her Evening Tea Party Dress. I had fallen in love.    The dress I'm talking about is what Selena Gomez is wearing.  Now, I'm not a fan of Disney anymore (hey... who didn't watch anything Disney when they were little kids?) but I really liked the dress.  Of course, the dress doesn't exactly suit my shape, seeing as I don't have much of a waist. Not to mention, it was about US$400....

Formal: Luly Yang's Butterfly Dress

Here in Australia, we call our proms ' school formals ' or just simply ' formals '. I suppose it is the same for the UK. So my year 12 formal is less than a year away and I've been thinking about what I could possibly wear. Most people wouldn't think about the formal this early but I plan to make my own dress. This isn't the first time I have heard of Luly Yang's trademark Papillon Dress (or gown...) or Butterfly Dress. I don't know exactly what it's called.  I know it is a little too extravagant to be a formal dress. If I see someone in this dress at my formal, I'd gawk at her dress for hours. Not to mention that this dress is US$25000 (according to a few sources). I would love to wear this at a wedding - if I was the bride and I wanted to stray away from the traditional white or ivory dress.  This dress can be used as inspiration for a formal dress. It's timeless, elegant, feminine and unique. I'm assuming it is a corse...
