Style: Wardrobe Update - Winter 2020

As the weather's cooling down, I wanted to get winter-ready for my wardrobe. Most items were things I had on my eye on but I was waiting for a better time to purchase, whether I was waiting out for a promotion to actually having the money to purchase new clothes.  1. Black work pants I got rid of my only pair of black work pants in January with a wardrobe clear out. They were half-elasticised and didn't fit properly. I found this pair of Glassons to replace. It's the cropped capri pant. Reasonable price, and 20% off with the introductory promotion when you sign up for their newsletter. Recommended to size down as the fabric contains elastane and will stretch. I've had to go in-store to exchange. 2. Black skinny jeans Flare is back, but black skinnies are still a wardrobe staple in my eyes. I held off purchasing them up until now because I didn't foresee any use during the summer. General Pants came back with their 30% promotion (they have one at least twice a year),...

Inspiration: Twin Peaks

Throughout the year, I've been watching Twin Peaks in my spare time. I've recently completed the series, hoping that I can catch the revival. I was introduced to this show when I was playing Life is Strange, where there were many references to Twin Peaks. I got so into it that I made cherry pie and had it with black coffee one morning -- actually a couple of mornings because I baked an entire pie for myself. Nevertheless, the women of Twin Peaks has style and I thought I'd do a compilation here. Audrey Horne She's my favourite, she's everyone's favourite as far as I know. There's something about that 40s/50s influence in her style that I adore, mixed with the 90s. She's got that classic look, but the Old Hollywood kind of classic. It borders between demure and sexy. Her palette is generally white, black and red -- sounds like my teenaged wardrobe and I still love that combination. I loved this costume on her too -- the one from One-eyed ...

Inspiration: Princess Jellyfish

Princess Jellyfish (Kuragehime; 海月姫)is an Japanese manga series featuring otaku (Japanese counterpart of geek but with more negative connotations). The otaku sisterhood Amars, along with a trendy cross dresser, form a fashion brand to raise enough money to buy their home back, which is facing the threat of redevelopment. They call the brand "Jellyfish" because Tsukimi (the main character) designed the dresses and drew inspiration from her favourite animal - Jellyfish. They create dresses that are more avant-garde in the beginning and attempt to develop a line of ready-to-wear, realising the challenges that come along with creating a new brand and generally speaking, entrepreneurism. I have a soft spot for this manga. I adore jellyfish, though I don't fancy having them as pets (I hear they're quite finicky). The live-action is to be out at the end of this year. My expectations aren't that high but that is because I don't like to place high expectations on ...

Celeb Style: Lana Del Rey

If Iggy Azalea is the Queen of Summer 2014, Lana Del Rey was the Queen before her. She's known for her 50s/60s Americana influence in her songs crossed between a bit of hip-hop and I guess you could say "sadcore". She's described as "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" and "Lolita lost in the hood", which I think are perfect descriptions of her image as an artist. When I first heard of her songs, I kept thinking of Nancy Sinatra's sombre 'Bang Bang'. Now this one's been in my draft folder for a long time because Lana Del Rey's style is hard to define. She's got a whole image on stage but when she's off-stage, she's quite laid-back. I did the best I could to find certain aspects I think are worthy of mentioning. 1. Vintage influence Del Rey's entire image as a musician is based on vintage appeal but with a modern twist. Naturally her clothes will be influenced by the 60s and 70s. On one end of the spectrum, she's gl...

My Style: Search for Red Lip

Pulling off a red lip requires confidence. It'll make everything look elegant and refined - whatever you wear. It's a classic that intimidates those who prefer a more subdued lip, like me. I'm quite fond of MLBB (my lips but better) shades and the thought of having a full red lip scares me. If I were to opt for a red lip, I'd go for the sheer formulas like Chanel's Rouge Coco Shine. Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Monte Carlo (62) Monte Carlo is a pink-red but it's more of a pink in my books. Pinks are fun and flirty. I can wear pinks just fine but reds intimidate me. There's only one way to wear red lipstick: perfectly. You need precision when you apply a red lip and that means no slathering on straight from the bullet. I searched a few brands for red and settled for Illamasqua's Maneater even though MAC's Russian Red caught my eye first. I adore the matte finishes and Illamasqua is a little less expensive than MAC here, so that's what I sett...

Celeb Style: Ariana Grande

No, I'm not reverting back to my teeny bopper ways. I adore Ariana Grande's style, even though I don't know much about her work. Her style is very much influenced by the 1950s and 60s with Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn and a sprinkle of the 90s. She has a similar vintage flair as Lana Del Rey but I'm not going to lie that I prefer Lana. Lana's the somber older sister and Ariana's the cute little sister. Here's the breakdown of her style. Fit-and-flare The fit-and-flare today is derived from the 1950s as Dior rose with their New Look (1947). It's still a very popular silhouette today, most likely because we're into the revival of previous fashion in this decade. Ariana Grande is often seen in these types of dresses and it suits people who like to look feminine. Most of her fit-and-flare dresses have a sweetheart neckline that accentuates the bust. Bodycon For people who are a bit more daring and wish to show off their fig...

Celeb Style: Clemence Poesy

Just before I start, I want to apologise for the infrequent posts lately since it is already the second half of the semester for me and I've got a mountain of work to do and prepare for my finals soon. Most of the English speaking world encountered Clemence Poesy through her role as Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter movies (that's how I first heard of her) and if not, probably from Gossip Girl as Eva. In terms of fashion, she has a very relaxed and easygoing style much like all those Parisian women we idolise (generally speaking here). It's mostly classic pieces and I love how she can be feminine even when wearing androgynous clothing. Here are some outfits that are more feminine: ... And more androgynous outfits: If you love the feminine aspect of her style, I suggest: A dressy blouse: sheer, ruffly, pleated and polka-dot - it's your choice but keep it classy. Short skirt A drop-waist dress Boxy jackets Black tights (for the win...

Scraps: My Style

Hello there! Though it has nothing to do with fashion, what I'm going to say is: I've finally finished my exams! That was actually a week ago but I've just been grieving for the fact that I ended my exam period with a fizzle rather than a spark. Anyway, back to fashion, I've realised that I've never really showed my style on my blog but that is because I did not wish to put anything too personal in this blog. I just had the idea to break down my style in this blog post, so that is exactly what I'm going to do. If I had to describe my style, I would not really be able to put into words. I wouldn't describe it as chic, or classic, sophisticated. I'm not trendy nor am I casual or relaxed. Though I'm quite fond of vintage clothes, I would not describe it like that either. It's simply a reflection of who I am, what I like and what I feel like on that day but I used to have some goth and punk influences in my style. 1. Plaid I'm very fon...
